Lost In Hatteras: Too Windy?

Is there ever such a thing as it being too windy? Disregarding hurricanes, of course. Well, it kind of depends on what you want to do and your own ability/energy level for a given day. I can say with certainty that it was too windy for me to go freestylin’ at the Buxton Slick on Saturday. Yikes, I feel old just typing it. Please, don’t ever ask me to say it out loud!

I learned that being wound out on a 3.7 is too hectic to try to get tricky, even in perfectly flat water. Of course, the loops and over-sheeted slalom jibes were as epic as ever, but any spock, grubby, or flaka attempt ended in sheer, violent, immediate disaster. But I’ll tell ya, the more I tried, the more I learned. I learned that the only way I could get through a spock was to take off on a much closer reach than I had ever attempted before. I also learned that spinning with only one hand on the rig instead of two kept the sail from overpowering. And there was that one grubby that I was able to slide all the way through. That single moment of bliss far outweighed the defeat of 30 failed attempts.

So, in the end, I guess I learned that it can’t hurt (much) to try again and again and again, because eventually, something euphoric might just come out of all that pain and defeat. Gosh, ain’t windsurfing just an awful lot like life sometimes? That right there is your daily reminder to always try your hardest out there, kids! When life knocks you down, well, you just get right back up on that horse, err, board, and sail.

Here’s a short video from another (much less windy) slick session. Perfect 4.7, beautiful sunshine, frozen fingers. What more can you ask for? Thanks for filming, Stuart!

Have a great day, folks!

  1. It only gets too windy for little twigs like you, Andy. For us 200-pounders, plenty 'o wind is fine!

Andy, any chance you can post weather stats with your sesh summaries? Thanks.

Hi Steve- Yeah, I'll try to sneak some more info into the posts. It gets kinda embarrassing, though, because Josh is going to make fun of me for not being able to hold down my 3.7 in 30 mph winds… Maybe I just need to follow his example and grow out my mullet for some more weight up top… :p

  4. I rigged a 3.7 once. In a hurricane. I bolted it to a waterski and duct-taped my feet on.

(OK, just kidding about the water-ski part but I have sailed 3.7 only once - probably needed one three other times.)

  5. And I cut my mullet off!

I remember back in the 80's windsurging at Hatteras before Hurricain Hugo. That was insane but one of my best times ever!!!

I remember an afternoon in Hatteras…April 2008. About 2PM…the water was basically empty. We'd all been blown off the water (maybe there were 200 pound guys somewhere on 3.5's but I didn't see any). I few of us were in the hot tub when the water IN THE TUB started whitecapping.

We went inside and waited for the wind to come down a bit, before heading out on our 70 liter boards and minisails.

I recall a sesh like that Mid April '09 as well. Steady mid 40's, gusts in the high 50's at the little beach in the back of Kinakeet Shores. A bunch of 6'0 Canadians were on 3.7's/4.0's and 70 some liter Wind Obsession boards. They said they were sailing non stop for maybe 5 hours. A number of them wanted to sail on but had to call it a day as their palms looked like lunch meat. Everyone was so spent that sailors who came in earlier needed to help them get their rigs off the water. It's always enjoyable to leave the water when you're ready to go, as opposed to the wind dying out, close lightening, etc.

Hahaha! I think anyone who's ever been to Hatteras has a similar story! Gotta love it!
