The local New England Iceboard gang has been having a banner year so far with many days of clear black ice and decent winds. Lake Wequaquet, in the central Cape Cod region, froze in with grade 9 “Hollywood Ice” for our enjoyment for three weeks straight. The ice sheet grew to a solid 6-8” which allowed a crowd of sailors, fishermen and iceskaters to enjoy it safely.
This lake is only a stones throw from the popular Summer windsurfing site, Kalmus Beach, which is famous for its winds.
Iceboard sailing has remained strong in this area as a result of the relationship to this popular windsurfing region and many of the original Freeskate racing iceboard gang remain dedicated to the sport and continue to improve their skills.
We have been trying to get some decent GPS speed runs for posting to GPS Icesailing.com website. However, the length of runs available on Lake Wequaquet restrict us to peak speeds of only 50 mph before we run out of room!
We need a full mile to make record 60 mph + speed runs where the first ¼ mile is “warmup”, the next 1/2 mile is “the run” and the last ¼ is for slowing down!
Lake Wequaquet is only ½ mile in any direction at best, so we were at least very lucky to be able to capture some great video footage to be seen in our recent release. Our speeds in this video are only around 40 mph and in winds of 10-15mph, so you can imagine what it must be like with more room and wind! Notable sailors featured are; Chad Lyons, Dean Withrow, David Major, Jamie, Deb & Eric Aimone, Tucker MacGregor, Any Berggren, and myself.
As of this past week, our January thaw blasted in with a tropical deluge which wiped out 6-8” of ice in 2 days! Lake Wequaquet is now liquid and seemingly ready for the Summer tourists to arrive! Meanwhile, the Ice season is nearing the halfway mark and we have plenty of more opportunities for “Big Ice” in the weeks to come on Lake Winnipesaukee up in the northern regions!
Getting ready for another great wintery weekend ahead!

Very cool editing effects. Nice camera angles.
So, I live in Falmouth and do some windsurfing. I would like to play!
