First things first: I want to congratulate Hatteras Island local Brett Barley for killing it in the Volcom Pipeline Pro! He’s cruising through his heats as though he’s surfed Pipeline for his whole life. For example, on Friday he pulled off a perfect 10 followed by a 9.67 — both on his backside at Backdoor. Bruce Irons scored the second highest heat total that day with a 16.77! Brett crushed it again on Sunday, getting through the quarterfinals, which put him into Monday’s semis! Keep on it, Brett! Go get that title! Check out the full story here, and watch the event LIVE here! By the way, Brett grew up surfing at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, which leads me to …
Stuart and I grabbed a short but sweet sesh at The Lighthouse Friday morning. Sunny skies fooled us into thinking it was warm outside, but it was decidedly not. 4.2 on the Tabou Pocket 80, numb fingers, and loving life! Check the vid:
Blame the kookfest on the ice block hands! Ha ha! Everyone needs to thank Ace for the loaner on the video camera. The on-board footage was captured with a wide-angle GoPro camera.
If you’ve never sailed The Lighthouse, you’ve gotta check it out. Best wind directions are NNE to NE for side-to-side-on, port-tack wavesailing. The jetty cuts down most of the littoral current without disrupting too much of the wind. Bring your pride — walks of shame are best performed with chin held high to the sky! Consider that fair warning — you will get washed way down the beach, many, many times.

very Nice ! looks cold thought … might want to try sailing there in the spring!
Great tune. Great vid.
Looks like a nice low is forming off Hatteras next few days… hope it sends some fun our way!
Yeah Greg, you'll love it! The first few hours of a NE wind are when you want to go for your first time. After that timeframe, it tends to get really big really quickly…
I've asked the bartender to send you a nice long period swell, uglyjiber, compliments of a super windy weekend at Cape Hatteras!
I'm glad you guys like the vid, thanks for the comments!
Cold? Looks warm by icy Long Island standards. Hey Andy will you be continuing the OBX conditions alerts?
Well, you Long Island guys are insane, so your definitions of warm and cold don't count. Lunatics
Truthfully, I was taking a break from the forecast alerts over the winter, but I'll happily resume if you're thinking about taking a trip. Just bear in mind- the Wintertime warm, southerly wind forecasts are very unreliable. I'd only bet on the (relatively frigid) West to NE wind forecasts coming true.
For anyone who doesn't know about the forecast alerts, you can find the details here:
