Philip Soltysiak’s trip to Punta San Carlos began with a flight from Toronto to San Diego, where his friend Matt Case picked him up. From there they packed the van full of windsurfing and camping equipment and headed South.

After six hours of winding roads down the Mexican coastline, the two pulled off onto a 60km dirt road that lead to the Solo Sports campground at the San Carlos point break.

They set up camp that night in 30 knot winds and cold temperatures, and spent the next few days freestyling across small waves while waiting for the big south swell forecasted to peak Thursday and Friday.

By Wednesday bigger sets were already coming through. Light wind in the morning allowed for surfing, and once the 15 knot afternoon breeze picked up they began wavesailing. Finally the swell hit and they were sailing some mast-high sets with perfect side-off breezes.

After the swell disappeared, they visited Lake Isabela in central California for some freestyle potential, and ended up camping out on the beach just steps away from the water and their rigged equipment. There they scored two days of freestyling on 4.2 and then two on 5.0 before returning home.
