Hudson Windsurfer: What A Windsurfing Group Is Good For

It’s after a disaster like mine that I really appreciate being part of a Windsurfing group. Man, did I feel like a complete incompetent after losing a sail and mast in the Hudson. I mean, what kind of idiot loses a rig? Here are three reasons why I feel better, all because of my local sailors.

Reason #1: Windsurf group can be almost as good as group therapy. I found out afterwards that at least three of my Hudson River windsurfers have deep-sixed their rigs in the water. I’m not going to name names, but one lost a brand new rig in the winter waters of the Hudson River. So I learned I didn’t tread new water here, and I feel a little better.

Reason #2: Local windsurf groups look after their own. After the disaster, I got offers from the group for inexpensive and free sails to replace my rig. When you’re not independently wealthy, though cost of replacing an entire rig at once can be daunting. Thanks everybody for helping me out.

Reason #3: Local guys pick up their teammates when they’re down. I was so freaked out after losing my rig that I left my helmet, PFD and harness at Swamp Hole. I didn’t even realize they was missing until I got a call later and found out my buddy John Spanos had picked up my stuff.
