Mention San Francisco and you probably think of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, maybe even the 49ers NFL football team. Or maybe you've seen photos of Lombard Street, with its overabundance of highly landscaped hairpin turns, or seen postcards where people are hanging out of trolley cars as they cruise up and down the urban hills. But only if you've been during summer can you truly appreciate the anomaly of this famous left-coast city's winter-like weather in the middle of August. And only a windsurfer can embrace cold whipping winds, treacherous fog, water near 50 degrees and the hair-raising feeling that somewhere beneath your board lurks Whitey, just waiting for your wetsuit-clad, seal-looking self to blow a jibe. Hosted by the Saint Francis Yacht Club, the 1999 U.S. Windsurfing National Championships was held between the Golden Gate Bridge and “The Rock,” with a long-distance race stretching downwind past Treasure Island. International competitors, pros and amateurs alike, gathered for this epic annual event and took on all that this beautiful City by the Bay has to offer.
