Photos + Video: Lost In Hatteras, Found

Hi folks. Welcome to the new home of my blog, Lost In Hatteras. If you’re not a regular follower, let me get you up to date. My name is Andy. I live in Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. It’s really windy here, and when it’s not windy, the surf is usually firing. Therefore, my friends and I spend all of our free time either windsurfing, stand up paddleboarding or surfing. This page is where you’ll find the details of our exploits, and maybe some other random stuff every now and then, too. That’s about it. If you’d like to check out the archives, hit up lostinhatteras.blogspot.com.

So let’s start! Winter in Hatteras is unbelievable. Monday and Tuesday were prime examples of the perfect winter setup. Start with a massive south wind, build up a big swell, then turn the wind straight offshore to clean up the waves for a surf. Windsurf on day one, surf on day two! Rinse, repeat.

Stuart, Brian and I grabbed a freestyle sesh on Monday afternoon on 4-meter sails. Brian was attempting some forward loops (which is always entertaining), so I whipped out the video camera and caught some of the action.  Check it out:

I decided to re-rig a 4.2 for a sunset sesh (can’t let that warm wind go to waste), and lucky me, Dan Kramer happened to swing by and take a few pics. Thanks, Dan!

And Tuesday’s surf? Killer, beautiful, burned in the memory banks. ‘Nuff said. Sorry, just one (junky) pic of Stuart taking off on a left:

You road warriors might want to keep an eye on this weekend. It looks like it’ll be cold, pouring rain, and windy as all heck! Just the way we like it. :)

Andy, Congrats on the new blog digs…very nice! I'm looking forward to continuing getting "Lost in Hatteras". Thanks also for spending time with Marci at the shop last week….she's stoked!

  2. vikingsail says:

Very cool, looking forward to some wave work in April either wind or paddle powered, hope you have some clinics then

  3. hotmach says:

    VT hole? Whaaat? village terminal?

This new flavor will take some getting used to. I think i can handle it though.

  4. Andy says:

Hey guys- Glad you like the new home, Mac! Marci and her dog were both super amped up on getting into SUP; good stuff! You better watch out on that race course- she's gunning for ya!

Hi Viking- will you be around the whole month? I don't have any clinics scheduled yet, but that's very subject to change… I can probably set something up for the third or fourth week? SUP or sail or both??

Haha, Hotmach- I'll forgive you since you're Canadian. VT stands for Vermont… It's the little dirt road just 50 yards north of the Canadian Hole. It tends to have much smoother water in WSW winds- keep it in mind!

I love that you guys keep the stoke going. Slick part duex: in the trap. Don't forget your cooler of hot water this weekend. I'm looking forward to wintry mix vids…

  6. George says:

i like the way the video started-but i was getting amped for some ocean action, then you drove back over the dunes to hit the slick. anyway-looking forward to the new format here at windsurfingmag.com

  7. Drew says:

  8. Ken K says:

Congrats on the new location Andy. I hope you remember us little people as you climb that ladder of success!

  9. Andy says:

Yo Fellas- thanks for the comments. The cooler was in full effect this weekend, OBXAddict- you called it! George, check out the next post for some ocean action. And Thanks, Drew and Ken!

  10. Fish says:

Sweet. Nice to see some more vids getting posted. Stoked to be heading down there again this spring!

  11. Fish says:

… oh, and by the way - how do you actually find and link to your new blog on the new WS site? Can't seem to find any blog list or anything via the menus.

  12. Yo everyone,

When Andy puts up a new blog post, it'll show up under "FEATURES", when yo scroll down on the home page. This is a new project for us and Andy, so we'll be making tweaks and stuff as we go along and figure out how to best categorize and place his stuff.

One thing that helps - keep the commentary coming! It's great for Andy and it's great for us. Trust us, we're listening.

I am from Florida and never thought people could windsurf Hatteras in the winter. Thanks for the great inspiration and photos

  14. Andy Z. says:

    Hi Andy,
I am going to Hatteras in second week of May. I've never been there before. How windy is there at that time of the year?

    Thank you.

  15. Andy says:

    Fish- See you soon, man!

Sharon- Come on up and check us out sometime (but you may want to wait until it warms up a bit)!

Andy Z- Glad to hear you're coming to Hatteras! May is one of my favorite months here. It's tough to know exactly what to expect, but we're usually in trunks or maybe a 3/2 full suit at the absolute most by that point, and the winds tend to be afternoon builds from the SW (up to about 20-25mph) most every day. You can check out the archives to get a better idea of what to expect by going to lostinhatteras.blogspot.com

Swing on by the shop and say hello when you get in, guys!
