The Walvis Bay Speed Week competition in Namibia, Africa, is under way, and two world records have been set in the fastest nautical mile — by Finian Maynard for the men's, who clocked an average of 39.97 knots, and Valerie Ghibaudo for the women's, who clocked 33.69 knots. Also new are 14 national records for the nautical mile, set by competitors from all over the world. The speed strip at Walvis Bay gets consistently strong winds that blow offshore over a a low, level sandbar, creating a long strip of flat water. Leading the battle for “King of the Strip” is Bjorn Dunkerbeck, with the fastest recorded speed of 42.93; world record holder Finian Maynard was right on his tail at 42.82. Right behind them is French giant Antoine Albeau, and the shaper of Finian's world record board, Patrick Diethelm, proving he can perform on the speed course as well as on the design table. Competition continues through Oct. 19. For more information, go to www.walvisbayspeedweek.info.
