Navman Maui Speed Challenge Kicks Off with a Bang

The Navman Maui Speed Challenge had an auspicious start at Kite Beach, Maui, Sunday, July 17, with bright skies and blustery winds. More than 30 windsurfers (plus a few kiteboarders) registered for the open-water event, including pro sailors Anders Bringdal, Alex Aguera, Micah Buzianis and former speed world-record holder Erik Beale.

All the participants were provided with a Navman Sport.Tool, and although no records were broken, impressive speeds were recorded. The top speed was reached by Anders Bringdal at 36.63 knots, which is especially impressive considering the open ocean conditions. Winners in other classes included 11-year-old Jake Olm in the Menehune class, Mark Boersma in the Junior class and Mike Warmuth in the Masters. The only female to sail was Paullina Pease, who had her hands full in the junior class, as her only competitor, Boersma, had speeds that toppedthose of many adult sailors. The event will continue on selected weekends until Sept. 25.
