The 2nd annual GPS Speed Challenge Series is currently taking place in Corpus Christi, TX. In 2004, more than 200 sailors registered to compete for the title of Top Gun of Bird Basin Island, with fastest men's speed recorded at 41.1 MPH and the fastest women's speed recorded at 36.5 MPH.
This year, the motto is “45 in 05″, as speedsters attempt to break the 45 MPH barrier. The event is simple. Sail what you bring. On any day of the week, declare your intentions to compete, (to the employees at Worldwind) show a zero max speed on your GPS, then chart your best course to achieve top speed. Upon returning to the beach, present your GPS reading to be posted on the leader board.
You can go to the Worldwinds web site at www.worldwinds.net and click on the “Speed Challenge” button on the home page for results and general info.
