How To Do A Vulcan

In this windsurfing how to, learn how to do a Vulcan, which is the gateway to a number of freestyle windsurfing tricks. In essence, you are stalling the sail so that body and rig can go around 180 degrees and the sail is now technically out in front of you.

Prepare to pop

Sailing across the wind, find a small piece of chop. Slide your back hand back, compress your front foot and pull down on your front arm as you oversheet the rig. This gives you pop and also stalls the forward momentum of the sail.

Move the sail across

Looking behind you, throw your front arm across your body toward your back hip. Keep your back hand in front of you — throwing it out tends to throw your weight backward, which doesn’t allow you to slide when you come around.

Make the grab

If you oversheeted enough, the rig will be in front of you, which means you can easily put all your weight on your front foot. Keep looking where you want to end up, and grab either the mast or the boom on the new side.

Sheet in and sail away

Twist your body to sheet in, as opposed to just leaning back. Once your momentum has changed direction, switch your feet and sail away.

Ben and I (maybe others) are still waiting for the response to his question.

Ben - while you're waiting, it might be advisable to pick up on the Tricktionary book and DVDs.
