The Eyes Have It

Have you ever come out of your jibe bent over at the waist and struggling to get the sail back up? Strangely enough, often the eyes are a major culprit in this scenario.

Two of the basic tenets of body mechanics are:

  1. the head leads the body
  2. the eyes lead the head

What does this have to do with jibing? When the up-and-coming jiber releases the sail, they immediately look over and around, frantically hoping to see the boom on the new side so they can grab it. The intensity of his visual search pulls the head and upper body over toward the sail, and we have the classic bent-at-the-waist position - a weak position from which to complete the jibe.

To correct this, keep your eyes on where you want to go. As you change your feet on the jibe, focus your eyes on the water where you want your turn to exit.

When you jibe the sail, continue to look toward your new course, letting your hands, not your eyes, deal with the boom transition.
