Pumping correctly can push you from almost planing to definitely planing.
First, remember that after each pump your board speed will increase; therefore, you may not sheet out the sail as far as the previous pump or the apparent wind will backwind the sail.
Place your hands shoulder-width apart, with your front foot and knee turned forward just behind the mast base on the center line. Bend your knees and hang your rear end toward the back of the board and to windward.

With the mast tilted forward and the sail sheeted out, start to rake the mast back and sheet in the sail with your back shoulder while simultaneously extending your shoulder and arm. Next, straighten your knees and drive your hips inward, pushing the board forward.
During the first few pumps, drive mostly on the front knee, otherwise the fin will spin out. As you recoil your body to the start position, hop your feet backward each time down the centerline. Once you have hopped to where the straps are, you can place your feet in them. Hook into the harness gently and freeze into your stance.
