Getting Your Gear to the Water

The safest way to avoid getting buried by your equipment is to ALWAYS remain upwind of your gear, whether on the beach or in the parking lot.

Always attach a rigged sail to something, preferably your board. Even then, leave the mast across the wind with the clew straight downwind, allowing the breeze to blow through the sail… not against it.

If you're carrying your gear separately, keep the mast across the wind and hold the boom at the point between the harness lines, with the clew lower than the mast. Stand between your board and sail, holding the board by the front foot strap and keeping the windward rail slightly lower than the leeward rail to allow the wind to spill off. Do not expose the deck to the wind. Beware of wind tunnels created by alleys, buildings and parked cars.

When launching with your board and sail disconnected, be sure to put the sail in the water first since it tends to stay put easier than the board. Then follow with your board and attach them in the water.
