One Mast Concept

Severne's S-1 and S-2 sails were designed to  provide fun on the water - and unclutter your quiver. Ben Severne, founder and designer of Severne Sails, gives us his own take on the S-1, S-2, and some exclusive design sketches of his ”One Mast Concept”.

Severne S-1
Sizes:
4.0-5.7
Mast: 400 RDM

The main design objective for the 2006 S-1 sails was to make all sizes feel more similar to the 4.7 – everyone's favorite. Certain factors that define these sails as being S-1's had to be retained:
• The light, reactive feel
• All sizes rigging on a 400/19 mast in order to reduce the expense and hassle of owning and traveling with multiple masts.

Traditionally, the variable you play with in order to get a bigger sail to have a similar feel and stiffness to a smaller sail is the mast. But as we needed the 400 mast to be a constant, we had to look at other factors such as number of battens, and the stiffness of the battens. As the S-1 sail size increases the number of battens increases and the stiffness of the battens increases. We call this the Homogenous Batten concept.
The defining feel that we were after is a reactive, performance feel. We achieve this through increased skin tensions and a higher clew position. The higher clew position alters the rig ergonomics, and promotes a stance where a lot of the rider's weight is transferred through the rig rather than onto the board.
One of the keys to making the S-1 more reactive is the narrow mast sleeve. This is cut specifically for Reduced Diameter Masts. Our belief is that for wave use an RDM is simply a better option. They are stronger, more manageable and have just about become a standard for wave sailing. By getting rid of the excess material in the sleeve, the sail is as reactive on an RDM as a sail cut specifically for a standard diameter mast.
Specific materials are used to reduce weight in the upper sections of the sail. The 3mm X-ply helps to reduce the swing weight of the sail making it easier to throw around. The end result an extremely light and reactive sail line, with consistent performance from 4.0 – 5.7, and the convenience of only requiring a 400 RDM for your whole quiver!

Severne S-2
Sizes
: 5.4-7.0
Mast: 430

As you might expect, the S-2 is similar in a lot of ways to the S-1, hence the name. All sizes are designed to fit on a 430 mast to reduce the expense and hassle of multiple masts. The Homogenous Batten concept is then used to make all the sizes feel more like the 5.8. The bigger sizes use 6 battens, whilst the 5.8 and 5.4 have 5 battens.
As a Freemove sail, the S-2 has to be a very comfortable sail therefore the ergonomics are set up to give a balanced feel. The sail pulls more forward than sideways allowing a stance where the rider doesn't need to stand so side-on.
The X-ply content in the sail is focused on the lower sections of the sail where durability is required. The monofilm upper helps give the sail it's crisp, reactive feel. The end result is a light weight and versatile freemove/free-ride sail that gives superior performance with a single 430 mast rigging all sizes!
