A World of Wind & Waves: 60 Days of Summer?

The kids here on Maui may already be back in school but my summer is still in full swing! Before I launch into my initial post for windsurfingmag.com, I want to give you a little background information. My wife Liz and I currently split our time between Bahrain and Maui - where we call home. As a 28 year veteran of the sport I’ve travelled fairly widely but I have always made my way back to Paia. This summer I had 60 days off from work and decided to do something a little different and that’s when The 60 Days of Summer Project was born. The aim of the project was simple: to show that there is far more to Hawaii than winter surf and that with the right attitude, the right equipment and enough time you can find waves, wind, surf, freestyle, slalom, SUP, skate, kite, hike, bike… you get the idea; tons of action and a whole lot of fun too – after all isn’t that what it’s all about? I hope that this project will not only motivate and challenge me but inspire others to get out, get fit and challenge themselves to do new things and appreciate what we have in life.

What would you do with 60 days?

To date (day 35) we have had a rather busy time of it. With waves on all shores and more consistent wind than in years past, I have spent a great deal of time in the ocean this month. I have been lucky to become reacquainted with old friends and I have met many new faces, which that is one of the things I love most about the North Shore Strip. From Kahana to Ho’okipa, you can always find fresh faces, new ideas and unexpected challenges to inspire you in ways which you never dreamed were possible. One of the toughest challenges I have faced so far was preparing for the Maui Slalom Series and getting back into racing after a 15 year hiatus. To catch up on the latest in wind and waves here on Maui, check out my blog where I will be posting daily reports. Here on windsurfingmag.com I will be posting regular special features and articles for your enjoyment. My hope is that you are as motivated by reading my posts as I am by writing them.

Aloha and thanks,
