How we test for planing

Sailing underpowered is one of the most reliable ways to test for planing ability. By rigging for gusts, not lulls, we get a better idea of what it takes to get a board up and going.

 

Trade-offs

Top-end speed and heavy-air control suffer the most when extremely early planing is achieved — although nobody complained that the Fanatic was lacking in either of those areas.
