Lost In Hatteras: Helmet Cam 3.7 Video

Yo guys, this has been such a freaking epic winter for wind and surf, and I’ve had so little time available to take advantage of it. But I kind of like the short little dawn, lunch or sunset sessions Stuart and I have been taking. It’s kind of like hitting the gym for a half hour of cardio, but waaaaay more fun. And when you know it’s going to be a short sesh, you charge it with a little more enthusiasm.

Anyway, I’m stoked to live somewhere that makes it feasible to grab a half-hour windsurfing sesh before work. The difference it makes in my daily approach and outlook on life can be pretty astounding.

If you guys are jonesing for a windsurfing fix as winter fizzles out, check out Dana Miller’s latest release of Boardhead International. Go ahead and click on all of those tabs up top — there’s an incredible amount of info in there! It mainly focuses on skatesailing, which can provide that daily dose of stoke anywhere at any time, day or night, as long as you’re fast enough to get away from the authorities. I can’t tell you how rejuvenating a lunch break 10-minute skate sesh can be, even in just 5 mph of wind. So I guess you’ll just have to figure it out for yourself!

But, before you surf on over to Boardhead International, check out some helmet cam video of a lunchtime 3.7 sesh at the Canadian Hole! A fella named Wojtek and I timed it pretty dang well — just as the gusts to 50+ settled out, but before it tanked to a mere 20-25mph. It’s amazing, but yes, that’s the scale we’ve been using this winter! When jacked 5.2 or comfy 4.7 starts to seem like light wind conditions.

Well, all I can say is: Yow! Anyway, check the flick, filmed entirely on a GoPro Wide Angle (which is why there’s only a little footage of Wojtek. You have to sail kind of dangerously close to someone for the wide angle to pick them up clearly.)

OK, today is light offshore with a pumping head-high swell. Time to go get my morning exercise! Have a great day, folks!

What's up guys- thanks for the comments! Judo….. CHOP!! haha… Most of that was just out of control 3.7 flailing rather than anything on purpose- ha!

Way to go OBXAddict! Your buddy is, I'm sure, only getting into skating thanks to you… Nice work!

Dang, you guys have good eyes… I didn't think anyone would really notice the whole Wind-NC.com thing… It's a work in progress, with more details to come… One thing's for sure, I'm STOKED!!!

I think you are on your 80L with the 3.7 here. I've got a fin question- I've got an 06 RRD fsw 85L and the factory fin is an MFC 23cm freewave. My next fin is a 32cm reaper so I have a large gap. I'm looking for a fin that will excell with the 5.2 - 5.8 wave sails. Maybe even 4.7 if it is psycho gusty and I want to stay upwind in lulls. The factory list the 23cm range at 3.5 - 4.5 and I'm 70kg.

I'm at the point that I do venture into the Atlantic but happy to tradeoff of power to get out vs loose on the wave. Also plan for bump n jump. What do you think? MFC freewave 28 or 30cm? Thanks!

Hey man, I'm very familiar with that board of yours. :) MFC 30 is too big for that board and you, I think. I'd point you more in the range of the 25 to 28. The other question to ask is where you'll likely be using a bigger fin the most- the MFC Freewave is not the best choice in the weedy sound. In that case, I'd put you on a reaper 26 or MFC weedwave if you wanted to hit the ocean on it as well. Let me know if you'd like more info, or want to order any or all of those fins- you can never have too many fins- it's like getting a new board with every one! (haha- Salesman Alert!!)

I've been pleased with the reaper 32 on the 106L cross. I use it in the lake too for 5.8 and under. What is up with the lack of a website? http://www.tangentdynamics.com/

The weedwave would be nice to try. Get a feel for the flex vs the reaper since I assume it will be drastically softer. You're spot on about fins too. I didn't understand before but now I know the fin can be more important than the sail.

  8. I love youtube but yeah it does have some bad points. Like with copyright and stuff.
